Serving Jesus in Our Community

Bible Notes

Friday 4th October

Bible Reading: Mt. 5:11
11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Thought for Reflection:
‘Like my favourite clothes / I am slow to take you off / and quick to reach for you / in the first light’
So goes the chorus of a love song by Eden Burning. It reminds me of the passage in Philippians where Paul talks about us being in Christ – to paraphrase he says we should put him on daily, to be so united, so close to him, that when others see us they see him. The word ‘Christian’ was at first an insult – early Christians were sneared at as ‘little Christs’ because they were so like him. Although this may not always be an easy ride as both today’s and yesterday’s readings make clear, isn’t also a wonderful aspiration to have!

Prayer:
Holy Spirit, work in me to make me like Jesus.
