Revelation 8:5 (NIVUK)
5 Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake.
This, Revelation says using poetic language, is the impact of our prayers, God responds in power on the earth! For the original readers, persecuted and feeling helpless, this must have been of great encouragement. I do wonder if the poetry says something more, however. The Bible repeatedly uses similar imagery to describe God’s presence – on Mount Sinai with Moses, in the Temple when Solomon dedicated it, and in Acts on the day of Pentecost. Does this suggest that in some way our prayers bring God’s Presence and salvation to the earth?
Think big in your prayers today, don’t be timid! When we pray God walks the earth in power – our prayer makes a difference.
