Revelation 5:8-10 (29.06.20)

Revelation 5.8-10
[8] And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s people. [9] And they sang a new song, saying:
‘You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.
[10] You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth.’

We are getting towards the end of Revelation in our Wednesday night studies. One thing we have seen is that music features frequently in the book, and we shall look at some of the occurrences this week. There are several songs; this one is sung by the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders. There is a lot to sing about in heaven. When we gather as a church we too have a lot to sing about – this is one of the things I really miss during the lockdown. But the book was written as an encouragement to the struggling saints in the Roman empire, and that may be why in some of the oldest manuscripts the last phrase of verse 10 is in the present tense instead of the future: “They reign on the earth.” – not just something to look forward to, but a victory to be experienced here and now.

Thank you Father that we can taste your victory even now – help us to see signs of you Kingdom today.
