1 Samuel 3:6-10 (21.07.20)

1 Samuel 3:6-10 NIV
[6] Again the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” “My son,” Eli said, “I did not call; go back and lie down.” [7] Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord: The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. [8] A third time the Lord called, “Samuel!” And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, “Here I am; you called me.” Then Eli realised that the Lord was calling the boy. [9] So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’ ” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. [10] The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel! ” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”

What a great response to God’s call – “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening”. God can speak in so many ways – through his word, through creation, other people or circumstances (even through crisis like pandemics!) and often we may not recognise his call at first but he does not give up on us! It is a good thing to start each day with this prayer “Speak Lord, for your servant is listening” – it keeps our hearts open to God and expecting his voice and may have greater results than we can imagine!

Master, speak! thy servant heareth,
waiting for thy gracious word,
longing for thy voice that cheereth,
Master, let it now be heard.
I am list’ning, Lord, for thee;
what hast thou to say to me?
