Luke 1:5-7 (30.11.20)

Luke 1:5-7 NIV
In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. [6] Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly. [7] But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.

In our age which promotes the young and overlooks the old, I love that the Christmas story begins with this elderly couple, Elizabeth and Zechariah. They may have felt that these latter years of their life were neither noticed nor particularly fruitful – but God sees and has a vital plan for them! No one is insignificant to God or without a role in building his Kingdom – and that includes YOU. I also can’t help but see an echo here of God starting the family of God in the Old Testament through Abraham and Sarah; through Zechariah and Elizabeth, God is renewing his people, and opening the way for a new covenant or relationship with him.

Thank you Father for your Christmas plan – and thank you that we have a part in it too.
