Bible Reading: Mt. 5:9
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
Thought for Reflection:
I can never hear this without thinking of the scene in Monty Python’s ‘Life of Brian’ where we see those at the back of the crowd straining to hear what Jesus is saying in the Sermon on the Mount. Mistakenly they hear not these words but instead ‘Blessed are the Cheesemakers’! Argument then breaks out as to what exactly this covers and where producers of other dairy products fit in…
This is a great illustration of what happens in our daily existence both individually and nationally. We all value peace, and yet rather than seeking it and striving for it, we have the tendency to be distracted. The distractions can take many forms, the need to come out on top or to win the argument, the desire for the best for ourselves, and ironically the desire for a quiet life.
Prayer:
Jesus, thank you that you gave up the desire for your status to be recognised, the need to win the argument, and the desire for a quiet life, out of the desire to forge peace between us and your Father. Help me, like you, not to be distracted from being a peacemaker.
