Isaiah 17:10-11 (08.07.17)

Isaiah 17:10-11 (NIVUK)
10 You have forgotten God your Savior;
    you have not remembered the Rock, your fortress.
Therefore, though you set out the finest plants
    and plant imported vines,
11 though on the day you set them out, you make them grow,
    and on the morning when you plant them, you bring them to bud,
yet the harvest will be as nothing
    in the day of disease and incurable pain.

Don’t worry, I’m not about to accuse out church family of having forgotten God! There’s always a danger in reading prophecy that you directly apply its judgements to yourself, but it’s warnings aren’t ours, they are for a particular people and a particular time in a particular situation. Of course the principles behind the warning still stand, and it does us well to learn from history and avoid the pitfalls that God’s People have fallen into before us. What struck me today reading these verses is the simple reminder that God is behind all life, behind all our provision, behind all creation. Science can be describe as how God normally acts.

Father, daily life, the normal every day events of day and night, food and sleep, work and rest, are all gifts from you. Thank you! Help me not to take them for granted but to give you thanks in everything.
