Proverbs 22:22-23 (NIVUK)
22 Do not exploit the poor because they are poor
and do not crush the needy in court,
23 for the Lord will take up their case
and will exact life for life.
So much of our life’s path is due to circumstances that happen to us rather than ones we choose. Maybe you remember the choose your own adventure books which start a story and give you a number of choices as to what the hero does next, sending you to different page numbers according to your choice? Like them, we have choices, but often they’re limited. In my experience people don’t generally choose to be poor, but circumstances don’t give them the option to avoid it. The good thing is that God doesn’t see them as any less for this, rather he calls for people to care for them and help them where possible to meet their needs and find a way out.
What can I do to help the poor around me Lord? Help me to be fair in my dealings, not taking advantage of others to get ahead.
