Ecclesiastes 5:1-3 (NIVUK)
Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. Go near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools, who do not know that they do wrong.
2 Do not be quick with your mouth,
do not be hasty in your heart
to utter anything before God.
God is in heaven
and you are on earth,
so let your words be few.
3 A dream comes when there are many cares,
and many words mark the speech of a fool.
Who is our Father? Who is it we speak to when we pray?
Although we can celebrate that God is our Father and we can address him as his children with no need for special words and phrases, or fear of being rejected, it is good to remind ourselves sometimes who it is we are approaching. Our Father is still God, the Almighty, the Ruler of Heaven and Earth, the all knowing and all powerful (don’t forget that the scale of his majesty only makes the scale of his grace all the more immense). Maybe today we should take some time to stop and stand in silent awe….
