Luke 1:50-55 NIVUK
50 His mercy extends to those who fear him,
from generation to generation.
51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;
he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones
but has lifted up the humble.
53 He has filled the hungry with good things
but has sent the rich away empty.
54 He has helped his servant Israel,
remembering to be merciful
55 to Abraham and his descendants for ever,
just as he promised our ancestors.’
If we were to design a God from scratch, I wonder what values we’d assign her?
If we hadn’t discovered our Father, I suspect our ‘new god’ might be quite different, it is easy to forget how counter-cultural his values are.
Mercy not power
Meekness not pride
Humility not position
Giving rather than accumulating
Faithfulness rather than self gratification
Come to think of it, who would design a god born as a helpless babe in a manger to keep a promise offered hundreds of years before…
