Bible Notes

Matthew 15:7-9 (21.05.19)

Matthew 15:7-9 NIV
You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you: [8] “ ‘These people honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. [9] They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules. ‘ ”

Here Jesus is speaking about the Pharisees, accusing them of being hypocrites. This word comes from Greek theatre where actors donned masks to show which part they were playing. By putting on the mask, their outside appearance is changed but the inside person remains the same. We do the same thing ourselves with fashion, the way we speak, the rituals we follow, the car we drive and the team we support. But as lovely as these things are they don’t really change who we are as people, what’s on our inside. Only Jesus can do that.

Father, help us accept ourselves and others for who we are, not judging each other, but relying on your grace to make us better people.
