Hebrews 13:1-2 NIV
Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. [2] Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.
Judith Kerr wrote a famous children’s book about a surprise visitor, The Tiger Who Came to Tea. It would indeed be surprising to have a giant cat come for dinner, but even more surprising to discover you are playing host to an angel! However you understand angel in this verse, a supernatural visitor or simply a messenger for God, the point is clear, be welcoming to strangers because you never know who they might be, and how in doing so you are playing a part in God’s plan.
How should I respond to this strange verse Lord? Should I simply treat everyone as if they could be you or yours? Help me to find Christ in the face of friend and stranger.
