Genesis 4:8-9 NIV
Now Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let’s go out to the field.” While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him. [9] Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” “I don’t know, ” he replied. “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
Why does God not answer Cain’s question? I can’t help but think he doesn’t need to, Cain knows the answer, and God’s silence on this forces him to face the truth. We are made in God’s image, the God of compassion and of community. Are we our brother’s keeper? We may as well ask who is my neighbour?…
Spirit, break our self-centred nature and replace it with Christ’s self-sacrificing, agape love.
