John 20.30-31
[30] Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. [31] But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
As John concludes his gospel account, he wants us to know that the purpose of his writing is “that we may believe”. What do we believe? – we believe that we have true life in the name of Jesus. That might sound rather abstract, but this is the culmination of John’s record of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, concrete facts, actual events, from the incarnation (The Word became flesh – John 1.14), to his death as an offering for our sin (Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! – John 1.29), to his coming again (until I return – John 21.22). This is the Jesus we trust in!
Jesus, we believe and trust in you.
