Mark 1:1
The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God…
So opens Mark’s Gospel (Gospel=good news).
The term ‘gospel’ or ‘good news’ is a confusing one. Like ‘church’ we use it to mean a range of different things as Christians. We call Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, the ‘biographies’ about Jesus Gospels, and we talk about our mission being that of calling people to respond to the gospel, by which we mean the call to enter into a relationship with God through repentance and faith in Jesus. Mark and the other New Testament writers see it differently. The gospel is the message of Jesus and the message about Jesus. He is the good news – his life, his death, his resurrection, his compassion, his mission, his vision, indeed everything about him.
How has Jesus been good news for you? Take a while to reflect and give thanks.
