Reflections on God’s Mother Love
After celebrating Mothering Sunday on Sunday, this week our reflections come from scriptures that portray God’s ‘mother love’.

Isaiah 42:14-16
14 “For a long time I have kept silent,
I have been quiet and held myself back.
But now, like a woman in childbirth,
I cry out, I gasp and pant.

If we were to play a game of word association, and I was to ask you to say the first word that came into your mind when I say the ‘judgement’, I wonder what it would be? The prophets often use apocalyptic, talk of warfare, or destruction, or the sky going black. I wonder then if this verse in Isaiah comes as a surprise. Here the image is that of ‘childbirth’. Here judgement is not about punishment or revenge, but of birthing something new, painful but positive.

Thank you Lord for the new life you have already brought into being in me. Please, in your mercy, help deal with that which still needs your breath of life in me.
