Bible Notes

Galatians 5:16-18 (20.07.21)

Galatians 5:16-18
16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

If you’re anything like me, you may have found keeping up with the various Covid-19 restrictions confusing at times over the last couple of years. I wonder if it was the same for God’s People in the Old Testament – there were so many rules and interpretations of them. It could be overwhelming if you see following God as all about keeping the rules. Jesus, however, knew that was missing the point. It’s not about keeping the rules, its about living in a loving way, hence when asked what the greatest command was, he responded to love God and love your neighbour as yourself. With the giving of the Spirit, it gets even more straightforward, we don’t have to worry about tracking all the rules, instead we focus on listening to the Spirit’s prompting and letting him shape our lives. He will guide us into a loving life and as a side-product, we will keep the rules.

Spirit, help us to be loving today.
