Serving Jesus in Our Community

Bible Notes

Galatians 5:22-26 & John 4:34-36 (08.10.21)

Galatians 5:22-26 (NIV)
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

John 4:34-36 (NIV)
34 “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. 35 Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. 36 Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together.

Sometimes celebrating Harvest today seems a little irrelevant, most of us aren’t farmers, or grow our own crops, instead buying prepackaged and preprepared grub from the local supermarket. Maybe in our age of climate change, perhaps it is time that we grew more in touch with where our food comes from and how it is grown and brought to us and the impact of this. That said, this isn’t the only harvest, God also looks for a harvest in our lives of fruit of a difficult type, the product of lives lived in tune with the Spirit, lives that are more like Christ’s. This in turn may lead to a further harvest, as others respond, attracted by what they see and seeking to know the Lord we have come to know for themselves.

Father, may you reap a harvest in and through our lives today.
