On Sunday morning Tim told us the anecdote about the great German theologian, Karl Barth. Barth (1886-1968) was a prodigious and significant theologian. His Church Dogmatics, a five volume work, weighs in at over six million words and 9,000 pages – one of the longest works of systematic theology ever written. The extent and depth of his writing makes his response to being asked to summarise his faith all the more dramatic. Rather than a complex summary full of hefty theological words and ideas, he simply quoted the children’s song, ‘Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible told me so’. This earth-shattering and life-changing relationship is the core of our faith and its heart-beat.
Thank you Father that you love us so much that you have made us your children! Help us to grasp more fully the depth of your love, and to live our lives in response.
