Bible Notes

Matthew 2:14 (24.01.22)

Matthew 2.14
So [Joseph] got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: ‘Out of Egypt I called my son.’

Jesus became an outsider. In many ways this was true throughout his ministry. He was looked down on: “a prophet does not come out of Galilee” (John 7.52); “isn’t he just a carpenter?” (Mark 6.3). Do we expect to be treated with more respect? – Jesus said “All men will hate you because of me.” (Luke 21.17). Let’s not be surprised if people think we’re crazy (or worse) for believing in Jesus. John 15.18 says “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.” When I was young, people generally had a respect for Christian belief even if they were not real believers themselves. Now they think we are something which belonged to another age but is not relevant any more. God’s people of old “admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth” (Hebrews 11.13). So are we!

Father, give us the courage to be different when it is right to be different.
