Acts 16:9-10
9 During the night Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging him, ‘Come over to Macedonia and help us.’ 10 After Paul had seen the vision, we got ready at once to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.
Does God speak today in dreams? He had done so many times during Bible times – to Joseph (the sun, moon and eleven stars bowing down to him), to Cornelius in Acts 10, and the next day to Peter, and in the above passage to Paul; and lest we think that God only speaks this way to those who are listening for him, remember that he also spoke to Nebuchadnezzar (twice), and to Pilate’s wife. The stock modern evangelical response is that he doesn’t speak this way today because we now have the full canon of scripture. But there are millions who never read it, and never hear it from Christians. And scripture doesn’t cover every individual decision we have to make. Let us not limit how God might speak today. But if we think he is speaking to us, is what he says consistent with what the Bible teaches? And does it make sense in view of our particular circumstances, as the journey to Egypt was sensible for Joseph, Mary and Jesus in the circumstances they faced?
Spirit, help me to be open to your speaking to me however you choose, through prayer, through the Bible, through others, even through dreams!
