John 2:1-3
On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, ‘They have no more wine.’
In the light of Charlotte’s news, it probably won’t surprise you to hear that weddings are on my mind, and boy, even for what will be an informal affair compared to many, weddings seem to be getting more and more elaborate and expensive these days, there is a lot to compare with many logistic issues to work through. Hopefully her’s won’t end with the embarrassment of running out of refreshments… I love that Jesus’ first miracle was sorting out logistics at a wedding rather than some massive set-piece religious ritual. It wasn’t ‘spiritual’ or ‘churchy’ it was utterly human and ‘ordinary’. Doesn’t this so beautifully underline that for him it was all about relationships, all about people, all about compassion and hospitality.
Father, how can I serve others today in the ordinariness of their daily lives, in the midst of their relationships, where they’re at?
