Serving Jesus in Our Community

Bible Notes

1 John 3:16 (05.05.22)

1 John 3:16 (NIVUK)
16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.

In last night’s Bible Study we discussed amongst many other things the story of the Rich Young Ruler who was challenged by Jesus to give away his money to the poor and find his security in Jesus rather than his wealth. It reminded me of Selina, The Countess of Huntingdon who founded the movement of churches we belong to. She heard the good news of Jesus and responded to it by using her wealth to finance sharing the gospel with her peers (literally the peers of the realm!) and with her communities. In fact her wealth is still enabling the good news to be shared. Later today I’m going to a meeting of the Cheshunt Foundation, a trust set up with the money left from the sale of her bible college, which is used to train and send out ministers and lay people both here and in Sierra Leone.

Inspire us to trust in you and to be generous with the resources, talents and opportunities that you have given us, to share the good news with others like Selina, and most of all, like Jesus.
