Genesis 12:10
10 Now there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while because the famine was severe.
As Noel pointed out on Sunday, Abram’s looking to Egypt for help when trouble hits is the first of many occasions when people do this in the Bible, all the way to Mary, Joseph and Jesus fleeing there to escape Herod in the Christmas story. They were the local superpower, an obvious place to turn to. I wonder if that should have been Abram’s course of action though? God had promised that he would be a father of a great nation who would rule over Canaan, maybe instead of turning to Egypt, he should have turned to God and trusted in his promise. Easy for us to say though, when we’re not the ones facing trouble. Makes me wonder though, what is my Egypt? Who or what do I turn to when I should be turning to God?
Father, I know that sometimes I turn to others rather than you, other things and other places, and place my faith in them. Forgive me. I want to trust you more, help me to grow my faith so that I instinctively turn to you.
