Deuteronomy 28:9-12 (NIVUK)
9 The Lord will establish you as his holy people, as he promised you on oath, if you keep the commands of the Lord your God and walk in obedience to him. 10 Then all the peoples on earth will see that you are called by the name of the Lord, and they will fear you. 11 The Lord will grant you abundant prosperity – in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your ground – in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you. 12 The Lord will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none.
The seasons are changing. Summer is turning to Autumn and the leaves are red with fire and beginning to fall. This annual transition reminds us of the faithfulness of the Lord who has promised to make us his people and bring blessing to and through us. This blessing is freely given, though given at cost, and calls us to consider how we might respond. The writer of Deuteronomy says to keep his commands – but we’re not under the Old Testament Law – and to walk in obedience to him. I like this picture of walking in obedience to him. If you’re not sure how to act, ask what would I do if God was with me, if I was walking with him, which of course we are.
“Great is Thy faithfulness!” “Great is Thy faithfulness!”
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided—
“Great is Thy faithfulness,” Lord, unto me!
