Serving Jesus in Our Community

Bible Notes

Genesis 1:26-27 (20.02.23)

Genesis 1:26-27 (NIVUK)
26 Then God said, ‘Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.’
27 So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.

These are verses I have come back to again and again as a Christian. What does it mean that we are made in God’s image? In some way, we were made to reflect God’s character and work – we were made to point back to the one who made us. This could be in our creativity, our loving nature, our living in community and unity, the way we serve others, or in the way that we care for and nurture the natural world. This image may not be complete in us, maybe obscured, but through Christ it can be restored. Critically, this means we can see a bit of God in everyone we meet today.

Father, help me to see you in those I don’t get on with, in those I find frustrating or annoying, and in those I tend to overlook or avoid. Perhaps spotting you in them will help me learn to love them like you do a little more.
