Psalm 119:99-100 (NIVUK)
99 I have more insight than all my teachers,
for I meditate on your statutes.
100 I have more understanding than the elders,
for I obey your precepts.
In the world of academia, as you go up the ladder of courses, each one supersedes the one below: a doctorate > a masters > a degree > diploma > certificate > A-Level > GCSE. With each, there is the assumption that you grow in knowledge in your field of study. A bit like Paul listing his achievements and declaring them rubbish compared to knowing Jesus in Philippians 3:8, the Psalmist says that study and learning count for less than meditating on and putting into practice God’s Word. This is the most important and valuable thing and supersedes everything else.
Father, help me to prioritise my attention and activity, and ensure that I devote time to your Word, that I may grow in your will – the most important thing.
