Romans 13:1-2 (NIVUK)
1 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.

One theme that is found throughout the Bible is that God is a god of peace and order rather than conflict and chaos. Rather than leaving us in a state of anarchy where it is every person for themselves, God gave us the gift of politics to bring order and stability to society, structures that nurture and nourish us, although, like every aspect of humanity, it is tainted by our fallen nature. Therefore as God’s people we should promote and support authorities where they seek this aim, and challenge them when they do not.

Thank you Father that you desire the conditions that enable us to thrive. Help us to support those whose task it is to bring this about, and to play our part in achieving it.
