Psalm 122:6-8 (NIVUK)
6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
‘May those who love you be secure.
7 May there be peace within your walls
and security within your citadels.’
8 For the sake of my family and friends,
I will say, ‘Peace be within you.’
If ever there was a time for this Psalm, these last few weeks have been it. From Ukraine to Gaza to neighbourhoods across England, there has been unrest. Sometimes we can watch the news and feel helpless as there is nothing we can do, but there is, we can pray. Psalm 122 instructs us to pray for peace for the sake of the people that live in these places – it is easy to lose sight of the fact that there are people just like us caught up in them – and book of Revelation reminds us that even if we don’t feel or see it, our prayers have an impact; Revelation 8:4-5, ‘4 The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of God’s people, went up before God from the angel’s hand. 5 Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake.‘
Take some time to pray for peace in our world. Ask the Spirit to guide you as you think about where to and how to pray.
