John 3:27-30 (NIVUK)
27 To this John replied, ‘A person can receive only what is given them from heaven. 28 You yourselves can testify that I said, “I am not the Messiah but am sent ahead of him.” 29 The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete. 30 He must become greater; I must become less.’
In our video on Sunday, Simon raised some excellent thoughts and questions about mission and our lives as individuals and as a church family. One question he said he asked of all his activities was, ‘in this, how can we make it easier for people to find Jesus?’ I wonder if the starting point to putting this into practice is found here in John the Baptist’s attitude in John 3:30, making Jesus greater by becoming smaller. What does this mean? Consciously seeking to shift our focus from our own needs, desires and interests onto his. If we do this, then we will find that in all things he will be made visible.
Lord, you must increase, I must decrease.
