2 Chronicles 1:1 (NIVUK)
1 Solomon son of David established himself firmly over his kingdom, for the Lord his God was with him and made him exceedingly great.
The opening verse of 2 Chronicles is a summary of Solomon’s reign, the Chronicler’s judgement of his achievements. To me it sounds a little like a Kipling’s Cakes advert, except rather than making exceedingly good cakes, he had an exceedingly good reign and managed to live up to the high expectations set by David before him (in fact in terms of his wealth, he surpassed him). What made his reign so great? It wasn’t his wealth, his rulings or his reputation, although he excelled at all of these. Through the eyes of the Chronicler, what made him great was that God was with him, and that’s what counts. This side of Pentecost, we have the promise of God being with all of us via his Spirit, an immediacy that even Solomon lacked…
Thank you Father that because of what Jesus has done for us, we have the Spirit living in us. Help us to open ourselves to whatever you wish to do in and through us today.
