Serving Jesus in Our Community

Bible Notes

John 4:34-35 (10.10.24)

John 4:34-35 (NIVUK)
34 ‘My food,’ said Jesus, ‘is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. 35 Don’t you have a saying, “It’s still four months until harvest”? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.

Another harvest that God longs for is that of people who have been harvested for him. Perhaps this sounds a little sinister, bringing up the image of the church being sent out with scythes to cut people down. It is far from this! What is harvested, the fruit or fruitfulness of the plant. God is longing for people to be and to live fruitful lives, lives that are restored, renewed, reconciled to him, lives that are transformed by him, lives that are productive and ‘as they are meant to be’ rather than empty or broken.

Thank you Father that you want good things for us. And thank you that you call us not only to know this fruitfulness for ourselves, but want us to help bring others into a fruitful relationship with you.
