Psalm 95:8-9 (NIVUK)
Today, if only you would hear his voice,
8 ‘Do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah,
as you did that day at Massah in the wilderness,
9 where your ancestors tested me;
they tried me, though they had seen what I did.

Meribah and Massah are names found in Exodus 17. They mean ‘quarrelling’ and ‘testing’ respectively. They look back to a time when the Israelites grumbled about the lack of drinking water, in other words, they didn’t trust that God would look after them. Moses in turn grumbled about them to God. God tells Moses to strike his staff on a rock, the staff with which he parted the Nile. He did this and water came out. God’s complaint here is that they should have known better, they’d see God’s miracles, especially the parting of the Nile. The message is a simple one, God provides, we can trust him.

Are there areas in your life where you’re in need of God’s provision. Look back and remind yourself how God has helped before, and let those experiences fuel your faith for today. Father, thank you that you are trustworthy; help us to trust you.
