Isaiah 43:18-19 (NIVUK)
18 ‘Forget the former things;
do not dwell on the past.
19 See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness
and streams in the wasteland.
OK, so I’m taking a passage out of context here, originally this passage is to do with God bringing an end to the exile and bringing the people home, and arguably looking beyond that to the coming of the new covenant in Christ, but I think on New Year’s Day it is fair, I think, to see this as a reminder that God is a God who is active, who is dynamic, who is out in the world doing things. It is easy for us to become comfortable with what God is doing, to only look for him doing the same things, but let’s try and be open this year to seeing him do surprising or new things!
Spirit, help me to keep my eyes open so that we are alert to what you’re doing this year, we don’t want to miss out!
