John 4:15-19 (NIVUK)
15 The woman said to him, ‘Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.’
16 He told her, ‘Go, call your husband and come back.’
17 ‘I have no husband,’ she replied.
Jesus said to her, ‘You are right when you say you have no husband. 18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.’
19 ‘Sir,’ the woman said, ‘I can see that you are a prophet.

It was hard work having to get water from Jacob’s well everyday like this, and so it is no surprise that the woman Jesus has been talking to likes the sound of the fresh lasting water that he’s offering. This water is just the first step to Jesus getting her attention. The key thing seems to be his understanding of her relationship status. Jesus isn’t condemning her, but he both seems to know her situation, and is prepared regardless of her current situation, to talk to her (we don’t know what caused her previous marriages to end, was she widowed or divorced, but her current situation would certainly be seen as adulterous meaning she was shunned by most Jewish adherents). Whilst society might be quick to condemn us (cancel culture is not so new really), God isn’t.

Thank you Jesus for not condemning us. Help us to treat others in the same way.
