Hosea 1:2-3
“When the Lord began to speak through Hosea, the Lord said to him, ‘Go, marry a promiscuous woman and have children with her, for like an adulterous wife this land is guilty of unfaithfulness to the Lord.’ 3 So he married Gomer…”

Many times in the Old Testament, Israel sinned by worshipping idols and following other religions. The Bible describes this as unfaithfulness, adultery. Hosea’s personal experience was a picture of God’s relationship with Israel, and through it Hosea learned how God felt. Israel’s idolatry was equivalent to adultery, in that they are both the breaking of a solemn covenant. T his is why adultery is so serious, and, along with idolatry, deserved the death penalty under the law of Moses. Only once we recognise the seriousness of sin, of putting our own desires first, can we begin to get right with a holy God.

Lord, help us to see the seriousness of our sin, so that we may truly desire to live as you want us to.
