Proverbs 29:8 (NIVUK)
8 Mockers stir up a city,
but the wise turn away anger.
A short verse today, but one I think that speaks volumes into our culture today. We live in an age when not just feeling but showing outrage is considered necessary, when we are quick to pour scorn and laugh at others, but this is not God’s way. Of course anger has its place, injustice needs to be tackled, and God himself often used satire and comedy to expose our pride and foolishness (think of the prophets and Jesus’ parables for example). The danger of being unthinking in our anger and laughter is that we only achieve division and not healing and unity.
Lord, help me to be a peacemaker today, not an appeaser, but one who brings your grace into difficult conversations and situations.
