Psalm 2:1-3
1 Why do the nations conspire
and the peoples plot in vain?
2 The kings of the earth rise up
and the rulers band together
against the Lord and against his anointed, saying,
3 “Let us break their chains
and throw off their shackles.”
A new king in Israel is imagined to be looking from his throne and seeing those under him as conspiring to break free from his rule and find freedom in going their own way. Sometimes we can have this attitude towards God, becoming tired of obeying his ways and wanting to be free for once to do what we want. If only we didn’t have to… If only we could… The thing is, as we will find later, true freedom doesn’t come from abandoning God’s ways and doing what we want, but through living in relationship with him.
Forgive me Father for the ways that I have sought to go my own way, not recognising that you only want the best for your people.
