Serving Jesus in Our Community

Bible Notes

John 5:19-20 (16.10.18)

John 5:19-20 (NIVUK)
19 Jesus gave them this answer: ‘Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does…

So why did Jesus pray? At the risk of taking this verse out of context (read the chapter for yourself to judge whether this is fair or not), I believe it is in his regular pattern of prayer that Jesus ‘saw’ what his Father was doing and through which he modelled his own ministry as enabled by the Spirit. If we want to work for the Father in our lives, then it is through prayer that we will discover our job description.

Father, show me what you are doing that I may play my part today.
