Bible Notes

Isaiah 7:14 (05.12.18)

Isaiah 7:14 (NIVUK)
14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

Although God has promised to rescue Ahaz and the people of Judah from Israel and the Syrians, life is going to be hard for a while yet. In order to encourage them through this period, he promised them a sign, the birth of a child, to remind them that he is with them. In it’s Old Testament context this passage is debated – which baby is Isaiah talking about? But when it is cited in the New it is much clearer – it’s Jesus, God’s Son, born in Bethlehem. God has sent us his Son to reassure us that he is with us and one day will complete the work of restoring his world and overcoming evil.

Thank you for Jesus, your Son, who reminds us that you walk with us at all times. Encourage us by your Spirit to walk in light of him.
