Matthew 5:27-30 NIVUK
27 ‘You have heard that it was said, “You shall not commit adultery.” 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.
As we were thinking about on Sunday, Jesus’ concern is not that we obey a set of rules, but that we are faithful in our relationships with each other and with God, that we don’t just do what we have to or ought to but that we act out of love. This means that he is concerned about our inner life, our thoughts as well as our actions – rules concern actions, but love governs why we act.
Spirit give us an attitude of love towards others out of which faithfulness and goodness may flow into every relationship and area of our lives.
