I wonder how many patient people there are? Today I am not numbered amongst them! Today for me is a day of impatient waiting.
Last week I wasn’t able to join you as I had to travel down to Eastbourne to meet a colleague for denominational business. Rather than driving, I caught the train, with the plan that I could use the four hours travel time to work on my laptop and so make the most of the day. I’d downloaded everything onto it before leaving and was all set for a productive day. Frustratingly, that wasn’t the day I got.
Jumping on the train at Victoria I settled down at a table – yes I was chuffed to get a a table! Then shortly before leaving I noticed the scrolling warning that the train would split in two at one point so I leapt up to check the map on the wall to see if I should swap carriages. Unfortunately the map wasn’t that clear. Spotting a staff member in hi-vis outside the train, I popped out to ask them if I needed to change. I did. I moved one carriage further to the front, got another table. I sat down and opened my bag to get my work out, only to realise that my laptop wasn’t there, I’d left it in the other carriage. I rushed back to retrieve it, only to find it had gone. Five minutes that’s all I’d been…
A week later and it’s not turned up at lost property. It’s been an annoying week. My old laptop is really quite creaky meaning that everything takes so much longer and it’s no longer set up for how I work. I’ve wasted a lot of time either trying to find the old one or getting the old one working better. The good news, however, is that I have a new one arriving today. Sometime before 9pm. I’m not good at waiting, I want it now, but I know it will be worth it.
Patience is an important virtue that it is good for us to cultivate. I want people to be patient with me as I know I’m not perfect by a long shot and I know I will mess up from time to time – and if I want folks to be patient with me, then surely I should be patient with them.
Eph. 4:2 – Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.
Bible also says…
Gal 6:9 – Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
But most importantly for me, I know that one day Jesus will return and put all things right – there will be no more pain or – far more important than my getting a new laptop. I don’t know when, but I do know it’s coming. That is worth being patient for.
Rev. 21:3-4 – ‘…Look! God’s dwelling-place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death” or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.’

Thank you for reminding me to be patient!
