Revelation 19.11-16
[11] I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war. [12] His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. [13] He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. [14] The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. [15] Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. ‘He will rule them with an iron sceptre.’ He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. [16] On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.
We might be puzzled to be told that this mighty one has a name which no-one knows, when these few verses give us several of his names:- “Faithful and True”, “The Word of God”, “King of Kings and Lord of Lords”. Bible commentators debate what sort of name only he himself can know, and whether it will one day be revealed. I have my own theory; you don’t have to agree with it, but It goes like this: perhaps we already know what this mystery name is – the name of Jesus. We know the letters that spell it out: J-E-S-U-S. But we can never know the depth of meaning which that name holds for him. You are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. (Matthew 1.21). Will we ever be able to understand what he had to go through in order to be our Saviour, to suffer God’s righteous wrath, to bear the sins of the world? Through all eternity we will never know just what it meant to him to be JESUS – God who saves.
So exalt, lift up on high the name of Jesus,
Magnify, come glorify Christ Jesus the King.
Majesty, worship His majesty,
Jesus who died, now glorified,
King of all kings.
Jack Hayford
Name above all names,
The Saviour for sinners slain.
You suffered for my sake
To bring me back home again.
When I was lost,
You poured Your life out for me.
Name above all names,
Jesus, I love You.
