This week we’re continuing to reflect on the scripture behind the topics explored on Sunday morning.
James 1:19-20 NIV
My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, [20] because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.
Be quick to listen, slow to speak. Simple and yet profound.
If we are to love each other, to relate to each other and serve each other, then we need to understand each other, our feelings and experiences. The only way we can do this is through listening to each other. How can we bring reconciliation if we don’t listen to those who stand in opposition, whether this is over Brexit, #BlackLivesMatter, the environment or even disagreement between family or friends. Behind the anger and below the surface, what experiences and fears drive the protagonists? Only by listening can we understand, and only by understanding can we begin to put things right.
Spirit, teach me to listen to all, especially those whose lives and opinions are different from my own.
Ps. Don’t forget to pray for and promote the Alpha Course…
