Romans 13:1,4-5 NIV
Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God… [4] For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. [5] Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.
I suspect most of us moan more about the State than we celebrate it – we’re all quick to criticise our politicians for example – but the Bible tells us that authorities are a gift from God for our good. At their best, they help and encourage us to live together effectively and fairly, looking after the most vulnerable in our midst. Of course, they are run by people like us and so aren’t perfect, so we should pray for them and even challenge them, but today, let’s celebrate them.
Take a moment to think of the different authorities that play a part in your life, enabling you to live the life you live. Give thanks for them and pray that all in authority may know and act according to God’s guidance and compassion.
Ps. Don’t forget to pray for and promote the Alpha Course…
