Luke 2:48 NIV
48 When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, ‘Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.’
Parent’s will recognise this part of the story. It sounds like Mary is giving Jesus a right telling off, but that’s not really what’s going on. Her sharp words come from a place of love. Until this moment she was dreading that they had lost Jesus or that something terrible might have happened. No doubt she was blaming herself; if only she’d kept a closer watch on him, or told him to stay with her. When at last they find him, this pent up love and worry and guilt come exploding out.
Makes me think about my relationship with Jesus. How would I feel if I were to lose him? How about you?
