1 Samuel 18:1-4
After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself. 2 From that day Saul kept David with him and did not let him return home to his family. 3 And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. 4 Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt.
The friendship between Jonathan and David is probably the most famous friendship in the Old Testament, if not the whole Bible. They are described as being one in spirit or of one accord. This talks of a shared outlook and desire, a commitment to each other, or unity. In John’s Gospel Jesus prays for us that we might share that sort of relationship with each other. He says, ‘…I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you‘ (John 17:20-21).
Father, help us to grow in our friendship and unity with each other – what can I do today to deepen our relationships?
