Serving Jesus in Our Community

Bible Notes

Hebrews 12:1-2 (23.08.21)

Hebrews 12:1-2
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Having recently had the Olympics and now the Paralympics the reference to running a race has strong echoes. Runners keep their eyes focused on reaching the finishing line. As we start another week, there is encouragement in these words. Surrounded by fellow believers and witnesses to the call of God on  lives, we are prompted by example to throw off everything that hinders relationship with God and focus on Jesus, the pioneer who going on ahead charts our route and who through whose sacrifice on the cross the way to heaven was opened for us.

Father, help me to live my life close to you and keep my eyes fixed on Jesus so that my faith might increase day by day and one day I will know the joy of entering into your kingdom.
