Bible Notes

1 John 3:7-8 (18.11.21)

1 John 3:7-8
7 Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. 8 The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work.

It’s a bit of a TV drama cliche, parents struggling to cope with teenage children who have gone astray and lost sight of the lifestyle that their parents brought them up to live. The fact that it’s become a cliche perhaps points to the fact that it reflects life – a good parent loves their child and does their best to bring them up to live as good a life as they can live. We hear this love and concern expressed here by John, ‘dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray’. He knows that the best for is is to live God’s way and not be distracted by those who want us to live any other way.

Father, thank you for sending your Son to deal with sin and the devil’s destructive ways. Spirit, help us to recognise and be faithful to God and his ways.
