Galatians 1:6-8 (29.11.21)

Galatians 1.6-8
I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel – not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.

The apostle Paul wrote to the Galatian churches because he had heard that error had infiltrated them, a false gospel, which obscured the wonderful truth of salvation by grace through faith, to which we could contribute nothing. The false teaching to which they were succumbing was very plausible, as falsehoods so often are (not only gospel falsehoods but also those spread in our own times by antivaxxers and assorted conspiracy theories!). Those peddling the ideas which undermined the true gospel were probably very respectable, even convincing. Like the Galatians, the people John wrote to had to combat various untruths as we saw on Sunday. Satan is always trying to blow us off course, but we must hold fast to the gospel as revealed in Scripture. Test everything you hear against what the Bible teaches!

Lord, protect us from the Devils’ lies, keep us firm in our faith, trusting in your Son, who alone is the way of salvation.
